I splurged and got a cab to the MegaBus stop, where I was forced to deal with a group of rude fellow bus riders who either didn't know the rules or just didn't care to follow them. I mean, why wouldn't it make sense for people to stampede the bus instead of remaining in line?!?! Of course I wanted them all to cut me in line! I just got there early because I didn't have anything better to do at 9AM! Ok. I'm done.
The bus ride itself was fine and we were in DC before we knew it. The last time I traveled to DC by MegaBus they dropped off a few blocks away from Union Station, so I was pleased to find out that they actually drop you off IN the station now! Yippeeee. I hobbled to the metro, caught a train, walked a few blocks, and I was at the hostel.
It's a really nice hostel. I checked in, got settled, and took a quick shower (because the weather is amazingly beautiful and 75 degrees and by the time I got to the hostel I was dripping sweat. Yum). After that I ran a couple quick errands and took my peanut butter sandwich and trail mix on a little picnic! Figured I'd hit the White House and Washington Monument because they were so close and I snacked on some benches, taking in the incredible weather. Heaven!
I walked around for a bit longer and then headed back towards the hostel to make a plan for the rest of the night. I lounged for a bit, met a couple of people, and then decided on my evening's itinerary: Chipotle and a movie. Now, you may be saying "Brenna, you're in a new city and you can do anything you want, why would you spend the night doing what you do in every city you visit?" Well imaginary naysayers, I know what I like. And I still have two more days to explore and do something different. Tonight I thought I would experience my favorite things in a new city!
I saw "Smashed," a quiet, simple film about a young married couple who like to party and whose nights often spiral out of control. They're in love and they lead normal lives with typical jobs, but after a wild night the woman realizes that she has a problem and she takes the steps towards addressing the problem. What makes things tricky is the fact that the husband continues on with his wild ways, forcing them to come to terms with their relationship now that one of them is sober and one of them is not.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul are the leads and Winstead's performance really stole the show. Can I just say, I love going to movies by myself! I don't have to worry about whether or not the people I'm with are enjoying the movie. I can just do my own thing. I had a friend once who said that there are two kinds of people: those who are willing to go to the movies by themselves and those who aren't. I just don't get why anyone wouldn't want to!
Now I'm just back at the hostel, hoping to get a good nights sleep so I can be up bright and early tomorrow for a complimentary breakfast! A day of walking and sightseeing awaits!
P.S. I feel like I'm at camp again. Like I've just arrived and settled into my bunk. The room I'm staying in has 10 beds (5 bunk beds) and everyone speaks different languages and tries to awkwardly make small talk. I can't tell if it's comforting or off putting.
