Day #7: Fire Alarms, Earthquakes, and Fake Birthdays (NYC - PA)

I'm in Pennsylvania! Leg #2 has officially begun :)

It was hard to leave New York and my friends but the rest of my trip awaits. I'm really excited about seeing everyone I'm going to see and exploring some cities/states that I haven't really spent any time in.

My last day in New York began like this: there I was, asleep on my little cot in Shelby's dorm room, dreaming of scarves and vegan cupcakes, oblivious that I was sleeping wayyyy past my alarm. My bus, I should mention, wasn't until the afternoon, but I had wanted to wake up at 9am anyway. Wellllll at 10:40am I sprang up in bed, finding myself in the middle of a fire alarm/building evacuation. Oh hellllllll no! I scrambled, still half asleep, grabbing my phone and throwing my jacket over my pajamas. I should mention that last night Shelby had to watch a fire safety video for her RA training, and I joined her to watch how long it takes for flames to completely engulf a dorm room... Let me tell you, we learned that it doesn't take long. So I scurried downstairs, exited the building, and found myself surrounded by NYU freshmen. Welp. Guess I can't really escape my past!

Luckily it didn't last long and I ran back upstairs, only after I convinced the dorm security that I was not in fact trying to illegally enter the building without a student ID. Then I spent the remainder of the morning packing and watching a couple shows on Hulu. Shelby came back around 1pm and we grabbed lunch downstairs, marking the first time I've been in an NYU dining hall in two and a half years. It surprised me how I remembered where everything was haha...

After lunch I gathered my things, strapping my bags to me like a camel, and said goodbye to Shelby. The walk to the subway wasn't bad. The subway itself wasn't bad. The walk through Penn station wasn't bad. The walk from Penn Station to the MegaBus stop? PRETTY FUCKING BAD. My duffel took on a life of its own, deciding to torture every muscle in my body during the 6 block walk. I figure that even if I eat a ton of delicious food on this trip, I am going to have some ripped biceps come December. JESUS.

While I was waiting for the bus (and after I had stopped wheezing and shaking) I gave my mom a call since we haven't talked since I left on Wednesday. We've texted but sometimes you just want to hear your mom's voice! The bus ride itself was uneventful, except for the fact that we stopped to change drivers twice. TWICE IN TWO HOURS. Sweet life.

We were only forty minutes late getting into Philly, and considering we were driving during rush hour that's not too bad. I wobbled (quickly) to the train, where I arrived just in time, and hurled my bag onto the seat next to me. Then the SEPTA guy gave me attitude for not putting my HUGE duffel on the ONE FOOT WIDE OVERHEAD RACK. I promptly told him that my bag wasn't moving and he walked away in a huff. It was a real bonding moment for me and the Giant Purple People Eater (new name for my duffel - yay or nay?) and I almost forgave it for being a huge asshole all day.

Sharon and Tom, my aunt and uncle, met me at the train and whisked me away to one of my favorite restaurants in the area, Susanna Foo's. I should mention that my aunt and uncle live really close to Bryn Mawr, where I've lived and gone to school for the last two years, so it's really great to see them since I haven't been back since I left Bryn Mawr last May.

After a delicious dinner (edamame and pad Thai mmmmmm) we returned home to their house and I immediately collapsed on my favorite bed. You see, the furniture in my apartment last year mostly came from their house, and now that I'm not using it anymore it's back in their house. Now, let me tell you: it may be twin sized but my bed is amazing.

After curling up in my pajamas downstairs I received a pretty awesome surprise: SURPRISE BIRTHDAY CAKE!!!! My actual birthday (22- eeek!) is on the 27th, so I wasn't expecting this, but there it was! A beautiful vegan carrot cake with lit candles! So sweet and out of nowhere.

After a couple slices (no shame) I curled back up in bed. There's nothing like being taken care of by family!

Until tomorrow!
