Once we were all showered and ready we ate breakfast and mapped out our itinerary for the day. We headed downtown to explore the High Line first, and I have to say I thought it was awesome. There's something refreshing about walking around the city without being on high alert - no bike messengers were going to hit us, no watching for the walk signal. It was also a great way to take in some beautiful views of the Hudson. Dealing with all of the reeeaaaaal NYC tourists wasn't that fun but I guess it was worth it for the people watching and quiet judging that Sophia and I did, right?
After making a quick stop in the Chelsea Market we headed towards one of my NYC landmarks: S'mac in the East Village. When I was at NYU we would go crazy for their mac and cheese, resulting in some funny stories that show just how far we were willing to go for some cheesy S'mac goodness. Let's just say that there was running involved. Enough said.
I hadn't planned on stopping by S'mac, mainly because I don't eat cheese anymore, but the little voice in my head told me to check their website... lo and behold they make a vegan mac and cheese! Holla! And it was good. I got it with rosemary and roasted garlic and Sophia got the masala genuine mac. We were happy campers after that!
Since our sweet teeth can't be ignored, like ever, when we're together, we then decided to venture over to Babycakes bakery, where we salivated over the entire case of vegan delicacies. After selecting two baked pumpkin donuts with chocolate frosting we giddily headed to the subway.
On our list of touristy things to do, the Staten Island ferry was next. Daunted by the sheer number of people stampeding the ferry, we parked ourselves on the uppermost deck and basked in the beautiful weather. We ate our doughnuts, took in some sun, and enjoyed the views of the city.
An hour later, when we returned to Manhattan, we headed back uptown to the apartment. We lounged around for a bit, resting our tired feet, but then headed back out for dinner. We found ourselves at Peacefood Cafe, a completely vegan restaurant. You know we're in heaven when we genuinely can't decide what to get on the menu because we can eat everything and it all looks amazing! Sophia got a potato, mushroom, cauliflower soup and an order of dumplings and I got a fried seitan panini with cashew, pesto, and arugula. YUM. Despite the horrendous service we were in love.
To close out the night we hit up a CVS for some candy because, let's face it, you can't watch Hocus Pocus without candy. A yearly tradition for us, so it was awesome we could do it again this year. Exhausted from our busy day but my tummy is full of some amazing food so I am happy! Night!
