Day #22: Zombie Animals and 22 Pt. II (NC)

OK. I'm really tired. But today was Halloween and Carra's birthday and all in all a really great day. So here are the bullet points:

Woke up and Carra and I headed out to run a few errands, where I got to take in the scenic views of Fayetville.

Grabbed Starbucks on the way home and Carra and I attempted to choke back our tears over the stupid Christmas cups we received our drinks in. It was not alright.

We came back to the house and started on our Halloween crafts. Seriously though - Carra is the master. We made rice crispy treats (both vegan and traditional kinds), decorated marshmallows, made a mean orange punch, and I whipped up some funfetti cupcakes for the birthday girl.

Then there were a few more decorations to make/assemble: "bloody" windows, faux cobwebs outside, lit up balloons, etc.

In between all of this we ate lunch, Carra and Alex watched some TV, and I dyed my hair blonder. Totally normal.

Then Carra and I got ready for the trick or treaters. We decided to make ourselves up as sugar skulls, traditional offerings to the dead on Día de los Muertos. We both struggled through the makeup but were finally satisfied with our fun, colorful faces.

With the Halloween treats and decorations in place we were ready for trick or treaters! There was a pretty solid turnout, and some of Carra's friends came over with their kids which was cute. Some kids were scared of our faces though... ouch.

After that we finally went out to eat dinner around 8pm. In our sugar skull makeup. There are very few people that I would do something like that with. Carra's definitely at the top of that list. It didn't even feel weird to be out in public, at a restaurant, wearing a full face of Halloween makeup. I guess we've done crazier things together.

We then returned home and watched Practical Magic, where I proceeded to munch on our Halloween treats. Yummmmmm.

Up on the earlier side again tomorrow, so that's all for now. Enjoy the pictures and try not to drool.

Day #21: Craftmasters and Crossing Things Off (NC)

So it's a good thing that Carra and I both love Halloween. And it's also a good thing that she's the craft master/Pinterest devotee that she is. This led to us starting to make some of our fun Halloween crafts today!

So we turned on this week's episode of Revenge and got to work on these adorable decorations: mason jars decorated like mummies and pumpkins. Using some medical gauze, orange tissue paper, paste, glue gun, and googly eyes we now have the most kick ass decorations for trick or treaters tomorrow. Along with our jack o lanterns of course!

Carra also made these "monster finger" treats out of pretzel rods, white chocolate (dyed green!), and almonds. So so awesome! There's still another pumpkin to carve and more decorations to create tomorrow. There's a reason why I love Halloween as much as I do!

After our crafting we just hung around for a bit. Once Carra went to work I got some productive things done on the computer. It felt good to finally cross something really important off my list. Now it's just time to wait.

I curled up with Gossip Girl on Netflix for the rest of the night until Carra got home around 10pm. Then we all curled up on the couch and watched some TV and attempted to tame the wild beasts (Brembo and Gunner).

At midnight it was officially Halloween... and more importantly, Carra's 22nd birthday! The scorpio birthday festivities continue!

Lots to do tomorrow so I'm signing off. Can't wait to show y'all all of the fun decorations and costumes!!

Huge hugs to my friends and family who have been affected by this asshole of a hurricane. I seem to have gotten out of New York/Philly/D.C. just in time. I know some of you still don't have power, and won't for a few more days, but I'm thankful you're all out of harm's way! Xoxo

Day #20: Pups and Pumps (NC)

OK so this whole hurricane Sandy business?! I guess I got out of the northeast just in time! I'm freaking out a bit on behalf of all my friends and family that are dealing with the crazy winds and rain right now. Here's hoping that it won't end up as devastating as they're predicting.

Luckily, here we have very few traces of a hurricane. The temperature has definitely dropped and it's pretty windy but all in all not bad at all. I woke up this morning and showered, ate breakfast, and tried to be productive. I let the dogs out a couple of times, watched some morning TV, and tried to catch up on this Sandy business. In the afternoon Alex and I just hung out and watched some TV. When Carra got home she and Alex had to run out and do something so I was good and got some work done on the computer.

The dogs are hilarious by the way. Gunner is the typical youngest child who just wants attention and loves to smother you with love. This often ends in him jumping all over you because he's just trying to give you hugs. Can't fault him there! Brembo is also very affectionate and needy but he's able to just chill out and hang around you without reaching the jumping phase. But I LOVE being around dogs again. It's been way too long.

After Carra and Alex got back we settled on the couch with dinner and... Monster House on the TV! You see, every year I watch Monster House while I carve my pumpkin, and once I mentioned this to Carra she jumped right on board! So after we finished eating we started on the pumpkins. We're both October babies so we live for this stuff. In the end we had two adorably goofy jack o lanterns and lots of pumpkin seeds ready for roasting!

So I hope everyone is staying safe in the middle of this stupid hurricane. Use it as an excuse to eat lots of yummy food and watch a buttload of television and movies. But then again, I never need an excuse to do that! Night all.

Day #19: Fake Hangover and Toy Envy (NC)

So I slept way too late today and I woke up wearing the fluffy leopard print hat Carra got me for my birthday, with my earbuds still in my ear, on a deflated air mattress. Now, for most people after a night celebrating their birthday/Halloween at a club, this would be par for the course. The fact that I was entirely sober and therefore can't use a hangover as an excuse? Hilarious. Or concerning. Pick one!

I spent what was left of the morning catching up on Dexter and reminding myself that I'm 22 now. Still weird. Then Alex and I headed out to Starbucks and the commissary to get some groceries. Being on an army base is definitely different from anything else I've experienced. Just being in the grocery store and knowing that everyone is either in the army or the family of someone in the army is such a unique thing. It's this community that can bridge all gaps and bring the most unlikely of people together.

After scoring some tofu, Newman O's, snacks, and avocados, we headed home where Alex watched the Pats game and I pretended to know what was going on. Ummm why were they in London?! Still don't get the point of that little experiment.

Later on, while watching a movie, we kept seeing commercials for really cool new toys, like light up Lego blocks, nerf guns, razor bike thingys, and really techy Barbies. Every time we saw one of these commercials Alex and I would groan about how we didn't have anything this cool when we were kids. I realized that there's a bonus for having kids I hadn't thought of: when they go to sleep you can play with their sick ass toys!

Carra got back around 7PM and we ate dinner and watched Hocus Pocus, reading out hilarious Hocus Pocus related tweets during commercial breaks. I just love that movie so much. Always makes me laugh.

Tomorrow we'll be carving pumpkins and making Halloween crafts to decorate the house with! I don't know what I would do without Carra, my kindred Halloween spirit. Thank goodness she loves it like I do! We already have our costumes planned for Wednesday when we greet trick or treaters... But more on that then :)

Hopefully the weather will hold out. This Sandy bitch is looking pretty nasty. So for everyone on the East coast that will be affected, stay safe and have yourself some fun hurricane parties! NYU and Bryn Mawr, enjoy your days off from class!

P.S. scarves as part of the hockey uniform - yay/nay/or best idea ever?!

Day #18: 22 (NC)

Another late blog post, I know, but yesterday WAS my birthday! I lounged around all morning, catching up on TV shows, downloading music, and just being lazy. Then I ate some lunch, watched some TV with Alex, and showered.

Carra came home from work around 3pm, we all got ready, and then we headed out for dinner. We went to this pizza place called Mellow Mushroom, where they had Daiya vegan cheese, tofu, and tempeh along with their "normal" pizza toppings! Vegan pizza! Yayyyyy!! So I got a pizza with a garlic and oil base, Daiya cheese, tempeh, spinach, and sundried tomatoes. Yummmm.

Then Carra snuck off and came back a minute later carrying a present and a plate of vegan brownies. So so cute!!!

After dinner we headed back home and got dressed up in our costumes. Carra was an awesome peacock with a homemade top and amazing eye makeup - she looked so good! I was a... leopard crime fighter?! Hahaha that's what I felt like anyway. My "costume" was a leopard print masquerade mask with black feathers, which I paired with a black dress and my distressed boots. The final touch? "Sleeves" of leopard print drawn with eyeliner and eyeshadow hahahaha.

Our destination was Barcelona, a nightclub not too far away. It was specifically a costume night so we immediately had a blast taking in all the crazy costumes. Once the music got better and more people showed up it ended up being a really fun night of dancing and laughing and judging other people, the three things that Carra and I do best when we're together!

Four years ago I ushered in my eighteenth birthday with Carra. I somehow managed to get permission from my boarding school to go home to Carra's house the night before (she was a day student) and we stayed up until midnight laughing and being our usual goofy selves. There were crowns involved and we finally fell asleep in the living room. We woke up all too early for school and her mom had a platter of cupcakes waiting for me. We immediately got high on sugar and drove the 45 minutes to school, blasting Britney Spears and singing at the top of our lungs. We were crazy and young. Four years later, here we are again, and in some ways it's like no time has passed. We're still giddily celebrating our birthdays and Halloween together!

All in all it was a great way to celebrate my birthday. It's weird that I'm 22 now. But the celebrating never stops and Carra's up next!

Day #17: Dogs and Double the Blog (NC)

So I guess me forgetting to write this blog post last night can be blamed on one thing: it's my birthday today! Oh, and a long day of travel. But mostly me being excited about my birthday. So I suppose that since it's a special day in my world, it can handle having two blog posts, right?

Yesterday was long. And pretty uneventful. Woke up, watched Scandal, devoured some trail nix because I forgot to eat dinner the night before, and got all of my shit together. I checked out of the hostel around 11AM, hopped on the Metro, and made my way to Union Station. I waited waited waited for my bus, took a little five hour ride, and BOOM! Carra and Brenna were reunited! In North Carolina! And I mean boom. There were a couple of times where my loser bus driver almost got us in an accident. Yayyyyy MegaBus?

So Carra is one of my very closest friends from boarding school, and now she lives with her husband Alex on an army base in North Carolina. Definitely a different kind of living! So Carra and Alex picked me up from my bus, we stopped by Whole Foods for Brenna food, and then made our way home... Where I was greeted by two crazy, adorable, excited furbabies!!!! And I mean really excited. Brembo and Gunner were jumping, running around, chasing/following me around the house, and peeing. I felt like Elvis or the Beatles or something!

Then we collapsed on the couch and watched an episode of My Strange Addiction which was actually terrifying. One of the women was addicted to cats and had close to twenty of them, despite the fact that she was allergic. Ok, you know, that's not crazy weird. But the other one? Ventriloquism. She was addicted to her puppets, bringing them out with her everywhere she went, spending a lot of time, money, and attention on her eight puppets. See? Terrifying. She did have a sister named Brenna though.

I opened up a package from my mom and my brother before I went to bed, knowing that I didn't want to wait until it was actually my birthday. Let me tell you, I have such a sweet family. Their generosity, their love, and their support mean the world to me. I feel so spoiled.

So off I go to enjoy my 22nd (eeeek!)

Day #16: Values and Vegging Out (D.C.)

I had a bit of a lazy day today, which I think is acceptable given my exhausting (yet thoroughly enjoyable) day being a tourist yesterday. Today I just wanted to take a break from being a tourist. I wanted to take in the comfort of doing normal Brenna things.

I woke up and lounged around for a while, finally venturing out once I had decided on a destination: Sticky Fingers Bakery in Columbia Heights. So I hopped on the Metro in search of this apparently amazing vegan cafe, and let me tell you: it was worth it.

I was in that awkward in between time of breakfast and lunch, and for me there's nothing worse. Do I go for the delicious pastry options? Or a sandwich? Is soup a good compromise? But then I'll need something sweet... This is how my food-obsessed brain works. I settled on a cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee and settled into a booth in the corner. You see, I've been craving cinnamon rolls for months. So I was pretty happy.

I dove into "Eating Animals" by Jonathan Safran Foer as I devoured my breakfast. The girl sitting at the table next to mine commented on the book and asked me if I'd read it before. I explained that it has been on my list for three years and that I finally picked it up. She then told me that the book was what convinced her to switch from vegetarianism to veganism. There's something awesome about being surrounded by like minded people. Here we were, eating in a vegan bakery, praising the same book and sharing some of the same core values. I don't really understand organized religion but interactions like this kind of fill that quota for me.

I ended up spending three hours at Sticky Fingers. I read (a lot) and eventually let myself order some things off the lunch menu. Feeling nostalgic I decided on "mac and cheese" and a "hot dog." Now don't let the quotes scare you. I'm just sick of writing "vegan" in front of everything I eat because let's face it: if you're reading this blog you should know that I don't eat meat, eggs, fish, or dairy. The slight chance of me returning to being a vegetarian for the sake of this trip was quickly eradicated as soon as I picked up this book I am now addicted to.

After I finally peeled myself out of my booth I headed back out into the world. I stopped at Marshall's and Target in search of inspiration for my halloween costume, but alas, no luck. I hopped back on the Metro and made my way towards a legit Halloween store, where I found one small component for a potential costume. Then I headed back downtown and returned to my hostel, where I hung out for the rest of the night.

Tomorrow I'll be picking up and leaving again. I really loved my time in D.C. even if it was too short. This marks the end of the "Northern" section of my trip (yes I consider D.C. to be part of the North for the sake of this trip). Starting tomorrow I'll be down south for the next month!

Gotta pass out now. I'm looking at a long bus ride tomorrow. But North Carolina, my birthday, Carra's birthday, and Halloween await!!!

Day #15: Blobs and Dots (D.C.)

After silently bitching (to myself) about the rudeness of my roommates in my room at the hostel last night, I made the very smart decision to pull out my eye mask and earplugs. Can you tell that I wasn't a huge fan of people yesterday?! Anyways, I used to sleep with the mask and the earplugs in my normal life for a few years, but eventually became a heavier sleeper and didn't need them anymore. Well last night I definitely needed them.

Nonetheless, I slept pretty well and woke up to the buzzing of my phone under my pillow at 8AM, like old times. I got up, got motivated, and planned out my day. After a quick stop downstairs to make myself a couple of peanut butter and banana sandwiches and chug a glass of orange juice, I was on my way. But, not before one of the guys who worked at the hostel said good morning and asked me to say good morning in any language other than English. Which is cute. And friendly. And cool. And shows how diverse the hostel's inhabitants are. But at 8AM when you're just trying to make a sandwich to pack in your bag for later? Needless to say it took me an embarrassing ten seconds to pull out "buenos dias."

My first destination was Starbucks, where I sat with my hazelnut soy latte and... watched last night's Private Practice... aaaand ate a brownie. I know. I know. But it happened.

Let me mention that the day started and it was a little chilly out and was drizzling, however (SPOILER ALERT!) it was amazing weather for the rest of the day. And I mean amazing. Like if I could imagine my dream weather today would've been it. The leaves are incredibly vibrant shades of gold and orange, the sun was warm, and there was a slight breeze. Heaven.

My first real destination of the day was the National Gallery of Art. Separated into two buildings, one with modern art and one with more historic art, I decided to hit up the West Building (historic) first. I took in some Dürer, Cezanne, Renoir, and Monet (amongst a million others). Some of it I loved and some of it really wasn't my cup of tea. But I found a few new artists I really hadn't followed much before but whose work really stood out to me.

One of my favorite discoveries in the West Building was Edgar Degas' sculptures. Up until this point I hadn't really encountered any sculptures that spoke to me. I preferred photographs and paintings, which is all well and good, but today Degas' sculptures of dancers really stood out. "Little Dancer Aged Fourteen" was by far my favorite.

Another piece that really struck a chord with me was Camille Pissarro's "Boulevard des Italiens, Morning, Sunlight." From 1897, this depiction of a busy city street didn't stand out to me at first. Sure, it was pretty, but it wasn't until I got closer and I looked at all the pieces of the puzzle that I was able to really appreciate it.

Some of the paintings, especially the oil on canvas, depict these beautiful scenes where so much is going on but everything comes together somehow. However, once you get closer and really attempt to analyze all that is going on in the painting, it all just looks like a bunch of splotches, a collection of little blobs of paint. You can't make sense of any of it. It's hard to remember that it looked so cohesive just moments before. So you step back again and distance yourself from the overwhelming mess. It makes sense again. You can recognize the beauty in it now. Every little blob of paint comes together and creates this beautiful picture.

I go through the rest of the museum with my iPod on shuffle, a risky little game where some songs are just magically perfect for the moment (Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, The Smiths, Amos Lee) and some are just so so wrong (Dane Cook, Miley Cyrus, Girl Talk).

I break for lunch, which is where my peanut butter and banana sandwich comes into play. I sit outside in between the West Building and the East Building and eat my sammie, all the while taking in some delectable weather and hilarious people watching. Then it's time for a little walk to enjoy the weather before I hide away in another museum. This time my feet led me towards the U.S. Capital building, some statues/monuments in honor of dead presidents, and the classic view of the Washington Monument. Not bad at all.

I joked (over Twitter, natch) that this is probably the most patriotic I'm ever going to feel. I'm know amongst my friends and family as someone who doesn't get enthralled by the fourth of July, I can't stand the Olympics and I'm never one to get into the USA chants (although Anna, Vic, and Shelby make them endearing).

After my walk I headed back to the National Gallery of Art, but the East Building this time. Already I can tell that it is going to be more modern: the building itself has more characteristics of modern architecture. Much smaller than its spouse, the East Building's main attraction is currently an exhibition of Roy Lichtenstein's career. I'd seen his pop art before, but I can't say I ever knew his name. This exhibition is really fantastic though. The many directions his career took are really fascinating. There's the colorful pop art comics, the black and white pop art style, a focus on romance, a focus on war and violence, and even some work around nature in the last couple of decades. What ties them together is his use of dots to create a full picture, kind of like all the tiny pixels in a television that when you pull away from it you see it all coming together. The exhibition didn't allow photography so I've pulled a couple of my favorites off the Internet.

Another highlight of the East Building was its exhibition on news and the art of print media.
It had some standout pieces but one of my favorite parts was this quote on the wall: "you read the handbills, catalogs, posters that sing out loud and clear - that's the morning's poetry, and for the prose there are the newspapers" (Guillaume Apolinnaire, 1912).

After taking in some Picasso, O'Keefe, Miro, Matisse, and Derain (one of my old time faves), I headed back out into the world, where I decided... I should probably go to some more museums. The Smithsonian awaited!

I should probably mention that most of the big museums in D.C. are free. And let me tell you, I was glad of that when I found myself bored out of my mind at the Natural History Museum. You see, taxidermy, mummies, and bones really aren't my thing. At all. But I figured I would go so I could cross it off my list. Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

I hightailed it out of there pretty quickly and headed to the American History Museum, where I immediately felt more at home amongst fashion and popular culture. The exhibit on the first ladies? SO interesting. Their clothing, their china patterns, their shoes. I sound like such a girl but I loved it. Michelle Obama's Jason Wu gown from the inauguration was center stage and I tried not to drool. Some bitches had the audacity to smack talk the dress in my vicinity, even drawing comparisons to mummies and toilet paper, and I gave them dirty looks.

While it may seem like the exhibit was just focused on the role of fashion and home decor for first ladies, that's not all that I got out of it. These women have had an enormous impact on our country. And as I went through all of the women I took note of their ages when they became first lady: the youngest was 21 (Cleveland) and the oldest was 65 (Harrison). I hadn't thought of it before but the age of the first lady plays such an important role in the presidency. How they treat the public, how they entertain, whether they're mothers or grandmothers, have young children or grown children. That impacts their role as first lady, and therefore the state of the country in a sense. It's interesting.

The exhibit on the presidency in general is very cool too. There was a section on growing up in the white house, and a section on the portrayals of the presidency in film/television, both of which piqued my interest.

After going through the rest of the museum I realized that I was exhausted. I wandered back outside and devoured my second peanut butter and banana sandwich, and began my walk back to the hostel.

I ate a delicious salad at Sweetgreen for dinner, watched the latest episode of Parenthood, and read. I finally bought "Eating Animals," a book that's been on my list for years. It's really good so far.

Well it was a full day in D.C.'Til tomorrow!
